Student Wyckoff — V6 January Barometers + DLI Segments

Four views of the beginning of the year. A separate December Low check.

Four January barometers, comparison with subsequent index movement, and an independent December Low Indicator. Annual areas on price, compact rows below the chart and a table help you compare the seasonal context of different years.

MEET THE INDICATOR

The meaning behind the numbers.

Student Wyckoff V6 January Barometers combines several approaches to assessing the beginning of the year. The indicator calculates index states from completed December and January trading sessions, identifies a positive, negative or mixed result, and lets you compare it with what happened later. It is a way to organize your observation of the seasonal backdrop; it does not turn a year's classification into an automatic entry point for any stock.

  • Four ready-to-use models of the January backdrop
  • Forecast area and subsequent movement
  • Four rows below the chart and a summary table
  • December Low kept separate from barometer scores
01

JayNewary — three observations of DJIA

The model compares the first five January trading sessions with the last December close, assesses the last five January sessions, and evaluates January as a whole. Each positive component adds a point. The result from 0 to 3 describes the combination of readings: a negative, neutral, positive or maximally positive backdrop.

These are trading sessions, not the first five calendar days. If a component's change is zero, it produces no directional signal. When reading the result, look at changes in the individual components as well as the color of the final area: different combinations give different pictures of the beginning of the year.

02

Yale Hirsch and Jeffrey Hirsch — different models

Yale Hirsch Original uses the sign of the S&P 500 change over January as a whole. This model has no three-component scoring scale: positive and negative January results are considered under its own rules.

Jeffrey Hirsch January Trifecta combines Santa Claus Rally, the last five December trading sessions and the first two in January; First Five Days, the first five January sessions; and January as a whole. The complete positive combination is 3 out of 3. Results of 1 out of 3 and 2 out of 3 are mixed and do not mean that a full Trifecta is confirmed; 0 out of 3 is a negative combination.

03

Student Wyckoff — the combined result of three barometers

This profile treats Yale Hirsch, JayNewary and Jeffrey Hirsch as three separate votes. A positive or negative majority of two or three votes determines the overall backdrop. Without a majority, the result remains neutral. A mixed Trifecta and a neutral JayNewary do not automatically become positive votes.

You can select one model or display all four barometers as parallel rows in a separate pane below price. This helps you see agreement and differences between the models while preserving each one's meaning. Agreement between several models does not guarantee the subsequent move.

04

When the final result appears and what to compare it with

The January result becomes available once the first daily February session appears, when the December and January closes used in the calculation are already known. Before then, the year's classification cannot be regarded as final. A historical area explains the corresponding period; it does not mean that the result was known on any earlier day.

In this version, the subsequent index change is measured from the last January close to the last December close of the same year, covering February–December. The current year's line remains preliminary and ends at the latest confirmed daily close. A fully completed comparison is available after the year ends.

05

December Low Indicator — an independent check

December Low uses the lowest daily DJIA close from the previous December. If the index closes strictly below it at least once in January–March, a breach warning appears. An intraday touch or move through the level is not treated as a daily close below it.

If no such close occurs before the first quarter ends, the result “held” is confirmed only after that period is complete. This filter does not change the January barometer scores. DJ:DJI is used for the main check; custom source settings for other models do not automatically replace it.

06

Where segments and historical markers are visible

Short December Low price segments are available on DJ:DJI and TVC:DJI, on daily and weekly charts. The start is anchored to the bar containing the date of December's lowest daily close; the length to the right is set in chart bars. On the weekly view, the start belongs to the corresponding week, while the level itself remains based on a daily close.

The segment appears after the full December period is confirmed. Stocks, funds and other instruments have result markers without this price segment. In weekly mode, confirmed daily sessions are processed with the completion of the weekly bar taken into account, so updates can occur at a different time from the daily view.

07

Appearance, timeframes and available history

Forecast areas, period boundaries, the beginning-of-year line and actual movement can be displayed on the main chart. Descriptions can appear on price, in a separate pane below the chart, or in both places. Features include four independent compact rows, a summary table, and settings for colors, transparency, sizes and label placement.

The full historical geometry is designed for standard TradingView charts with a timeframe no higher than one week. On higher timeframes and nonstandard chart types, such as Renko or Heikin Ashi, the table remains available while drawings are disabled. History depth depends on the data source and platform limits; setting the number of years does not create missing quotes.

How to start observing and configure alerts

Start with one model and a regular daily or weekly chart. Then compare several completed years and add December Low separately. The annual backdrop is useful to compare with the selected instrument's current price and its own movement conditions; it is not a ready-made recommendation to buy or sell.

Alerts for the models' final states and December Low results are created separately in TradingView. A subscription to this indicator is offered for one year at $150. A free one-day trial is available from the agreed start; submitting a request does not start the access period.

What you receive

Access to the indicator in your TradingView account for your chosen subscription period, calculation and display settings, and email support. Source code is not included in the subscription. You need your own TradingView account; any TradingView features or paid plan required for your chosen way of working are paid for separately.

This is an independent custom Student Wyckoff implementation. The names JayNewary, Yale Hirsch and Jeffrey Hirsch identify different models represented in this version. The product is not an official development by the authors of these approaches or by TradingView. Calculations and available history depend on the selected index sources.
